“Leo Varadkar has some brass neck spoofing about beef and the environment”- Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn
Donegal Senator and Sinn Féin Agriculture Spokesperson in the Seanad, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has stated that “Leo Varadkar has some brass neck spoofing about beef and the environment” considering Fine Gael’s approach to farming families and the beef industry in Ireland and Europe over the years.
Senator Mac Lochlainn said:
“Last year, I spoke in the Seanad about the decimation of the traditional family farming model in Ireland. The Western Development Commission had recently revealed that a massive 40% of family farms across Donegal and the West of Ireland have disappeared over the last 20 years and earlier that day, Oireachtas Committees learned that one in three young farmers under the age of 35, across Ireland, had been forced off the land over the last ten years.
Fine Gael’s policies have torn apart Ireland’s family farms and pushed farming increasingly towards the intensive, big farm model that’s desired by the profiteering meat factories and supermarkets”
“And Fine Gael MEPs have supported EU trade deals that would recklessly allow thousands of tonnes of ranch farmed Canadian or Brazilian beef to flood European markets, further squeezing Irish beef producers.
So I state loud and clear, that Leo Varadkar, as the leader of Fine Gael, has some brass neck to be spoofing about beef and the environment considering his party’s fawning support for the EU cheap food policies that destroy environmentally sustainable family farms and replace them with big ranch farmers and short termist profiteering and the three card trick of farming subsidies that actually direct huge amounts of tax payers money to meat factories and supermarkets in support of appalling prices to the primary producers”.
Leo Varadkar is a right wing political leader whose party’s policies have wrecked an environmentally sustainable family farm model in exchange for an environmentally damaging, global ranch farming model, flooding EU markets. Rather than spoofing about eating less beef, he should admit his right wing policies have failed and actually start to support family farms and farming cooperatives to provide environmentally sustainable organic meat and food to our people”.
